Please note that this glitch only exists in the Japanese versions of the game, or is otherwise a glitch from a Pokémon game which was only released in Japan.

The item creation Select glitch, also known as the make your own items glitch is a Select glitch in Pokémon Red, Green, and Pokémon Blue (Japanese). It allows the player to convert part of a Pokémon's nickname into items.

This select button glitch can be used to change up to five items in Red/Green/Blue, without the need of an item duplicating or item changing glitch Pokémon. Press the select button on the 14th item, exit with B, B and swap it with the fifth Pokémon in battle to replace it with a level 0 glitchy Pokémon without any moves.

The index number of the first nickname character for the fifth Pokémon changes the 2nd item's quantity (e.g. - = hex:E3 =128 items), the second character changes the 3rd item identifier (e.g. ぐ (gu/ku with a dakuten = hex:28 = Rare Candy), and the third character changes the 3rd item quantity.) The fourth and fifth items also get changed in an unknown way.

When nicknaming the Pokémon, you might need to have certain characters not initially listed. Often, you'll have to go to the bottom of the screen and choose hiragana. To get characters with diacritic signs choose the character without one and then the diacritic. Unfortunately, some of these characters cannot be chosen if the Japanese characters usually don't have those diacritics.
