Please note that this glitch only exists in the Japanese versions of the game, or is otherwise a glitch from a Pokémon game which was only released in Japan.

The Select glitch is a glitch in Japanese Pokémon Red, Green, and Pokémon Blue (Japanese) (not including Pocket Monsters Pikachu) that allows the player to either swap an entry within one menu with an entry from another (e.g. pressing Select on item 7 allows the player to swap Pokémon 7—a closed menu Select glitch), or swap entries in a list without leaving the menu (a special menu Select glitch).

This glitch was fixed in Pocket Monsters Pikachu and all overseas versions of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow.

Select glitches may be used by players to obtain specific items, moves, Pokémon, fight special Trainers, warp to different locations and so on, and the dokokashira door glitch (which allows the player to warp to the Hall of Fame) is an example of a Select glitch popular in tool-assisted speedruns of Pocket Monsters Red, Green (and Blue).

Uses and variations of the Select glitch include:

  • Closed menu Select glitch (Examples: dokokashira door glitch, fossil conversion glitch, Trainer mutation glitch).
  • Special menu Select glitch (Examples: Cerulean City badge man entry swapping, Silph Co. elevator entry swapping).

Select glitches to obtain items (item creation glitch) may be useful for setting up arbitrary code execution. Swapping a Pokémon in an expanded party (which is also possible in the localizations through Super Glitch, 255 Pokémon glitch) may also have the same effect as performing a closed menu item menu>Pokémon menu Select glitch, although many Select glitches do not work the same on the localizations when 'ported' over.
