The Shiny variation glitch occurs in Pokémon Sword and Shield. This game introduced a new variation of Shiny Pokémon; a squares sparkle instead of the typical stars sparkle.

It was intended that the squares sparkle would be much rarer than the stars sparkle, however, due to a programming oversight the inverse is true in general wild Pokémon battles. Specifically, rather than the intended 1/16 chance of a squares sparkle (which happens during Max Raid Battles, receiving and hatching Pokémon Eggs, and "static encounters") there is actually a 0.9375/4096 chance of the Shiny to be a 'stars encounter' and a 4095/4096 chance of the Shiny to be a 'squares encounter'.
