(view, talk, edit)

Please note that this glitch only exists in the Japanese versions of the game, or is otherwise a glitch from a Pokémon game which was only released in Japan.

In Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, an unterminated name glitch item can be used to trigger an instant encounter through a trick known as "Calling Pokémon with the flute" (Japanese: ポケモンを呼ぶ笛), similarly to the international LOL glitch. It is closely related to the Yami Shop glitch.

When the effect is triggered via a Poké Mart's Sell option, it is sometimes called the shop fishing glitch (Japanese: 店釣りバグ).

Steps

1. Move to an ideal place that contains a 0x50 sub-tile to prevent the unterminated name glitch item from freezing the game upon selection.

2. Order your items so that a Poké Flute is the first in the list, and the unterminated name glitch item is directly below it.

3. Press A on the glitch item and cancel with B to force select the Poké Flute if force selection is enabled (due to corruption of address 0xD05A (0xD059 in Yellow).

4. A wild Pokémon or Trainer will appear based on the title on the screen at coordinates x=01, y=0B.

Step 2 can be replaced with attempting to sell the glitch item (with the proper screen data saved) in a Poké Mart when an unsellable item, such as the Poké Flute, is at the top of the page of the items list.

Below are two examples of locations that give Mew.

Mechanics

When the player presses A on an unterminated name glitch item, its name will be copied from the buffer at CD68 to CF45. As the name is greater than 20 characters with no hex:50, data is copied to CF59 from beyond the buffer, which is the beginning of screen data that is saved after opening menus such as the item pack, party or Pokédex. No data will be copied after a hex:50 (if it exists) in the screen data.

An instant encounter with a Pokémon occurs when a value to D036 is written to, with the Pokémon depending on the tile on the screen at BGB coordinates x=01, y=0B.

Notes

Due to the equivalent coordinates being a menu tile, it is not known how to exploit the glitch in the international versions as the only outcome is a Hooked Metapod. However, the glitch oobLG allows the manipulation of D059/8, the English version instant encounter address.

Additionally, other glitches including CoolTrainer♀ corruption, Double distort CoolTrainer♀ corruption, LOL glitch and Rival LOL glitch alternatively allow the player to get many Pokémon by corrupting CFD8/7 (the enemy Pokémon in battle address) and capturing the Pokémon.
