This board is to discuss the origins of the moves and names in Pokemon.
i.e. Growl is the same as Howl, and so (?)owl means vocal somethings.

I think Noctowl comes from Nocti (Night in Latin) and Owl.

I saw on a site somewhere that Ampharos cames from Amp and Pharaoh *facepalms* where it actually comes from Amp and Pharos (Pharos is the name of a lighthouse)

Anyways…
Articuno=Arctic+UNO
Zapdos=Zap+DOS
Moltres=Molten+TRES

Uno, Dos, and Tres is Spanish for 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

Darkrai=Dark+Kurai (Japanese word for sorrow and darkness)
Spheal=Sphere+Seal
Sealeo=Seal+Leo (Leo is Latin for lion, like in Sea Lion)
Walrein=Walrus+Rein?
Huntail=Hunt+Tail
Gorebyss=Gore+Abyss (that sounds violent)
Croconaw=Crocodile+Gnaw?
Feraligatr=Feral+Aligator
Combee=Comb (you know, like the comes in beehives)+Bee
Chimchar=Chimp+Char (IIRC, Char is a synonym for burning)
Monferno=Monkey+Inferno
Infernape=Inferno+SnapeApe
Goukazaru (Infernape's Japanese name)=Gouka (hellfire)+Zaru (like Saru, monkey)

Yes, but I was talking about another form, since Nocti is closer to Noct than Nox.

Oh, yeah. Dratini= Dragon, Teeny
Dragonair= Dragon, Air
