I have never noticed this but about Aerodactyl's FR/LG fossil sprite.

The Aerodactyl fossil sprite on Pokémon Firered and Leafgreen has the exact same pose as its older sprite from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, even though Pokémon Firered and Leafgreen released a different type of Aerodactyl sprite.

Compare: (R/S sprite)

With this: (FR/LG fossil sprite)

This is the normal Aerodactyl sprite on FR/LG:

Nintendo perhaps forgot to make an exact fossil sprite for that pose, the closest is its Pokémon Red (JP)/ Green sprite, but even that isn't the same as it has no tail and its jaws are in a slightly different position.:

I would guess that this backs up some of the theories that the newer Pokémon games were made from the previous games; possibly as a template. This is probably not the case with D/P and R/S/E because they feature entirely different engines; however I would support the idea that perhaps when making Pokémon FR/LG Nintendo just editted Pokémon R/S.

There was even once a glitch in earlier versions of Pokémon Firered/Leafgreen where for example when viewing Spearow's Pokédex entry it would display "Tiny Pokémon" instead of "Tiny bird Pokémon", which was probably based on technical limitations in the older Pokémon games as Ruby and Sapphire would instead call it the "Tinybird" Pokémon with no spaces.

That, or their spriters are lazy. For comparison, look at the backsprites for some Johto Pokemon in G/S/C:

And the R/S/E backsprites:

Obvious revamps. You probably don't know how hard it is to scratch an entirely new sprite, but it is hard. Why reinvent the wheel?

Both theories are extremely probable.

Perhaps the "Tiny Pokémon" thing could be added to the wiki. Anyway, nice find to support that theory.

It's not that they're lazy, it's just wanted to revamp old sprites. Actually, that's why the G/R fossil sprite look like the Aerodactyl in LG/FR.

Um just so you know, there are a lot of unused leftover Key items from Ruby and Sapphire in FR/LG so this isn't new news to me.

I even have a video of it:

Yeah, I did this two years ago so that's why things look noobish. You get the basic point though I hope.
