1. It's said that when the flame of Charmander goes out, it dies.

2. There's no real answer to this. The Japanese name is Firelight Hot Springs (Japanese: とび). The Japanese name for Ember is Hinoko, ひの "Sparks", not Firelight (or maybe it might be, with certain kanji). The Ember Spa is used to protect Charmander and its evolutions, which is why Bulbapedia article says that it probably comes in reference to keeping the fire of the Charmander evolutionary line alight.

By the way I edited the Bulbapedia article. What you're saying about question 2 is something I agree with.
