Pokemon Gen I and Gen II cries

Hello everyone :).

It is known that Gen I only has 37 unique cries, and that many pokemon use the same cry, but edited (pitch, length, layers, etc).
In Gen II, 30 new cries were introduced.

To my knowledge, there isn't a list of these unique cries, and so I've tried my best to compile one, from the ones I thought got along together, and which ones not.
I'm probably wrong in some or many cases, so here is where you guys come in, to share your knowledge on this :).

Here is my list:
- Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite
- Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Rhyhorn, Rhydon, Magmar
- Squirtle, Wartortle, Zubat, Golbat, Tauros, Crobat

Well that's that… correct and add on to this as you have discovered things.

Also, is there a tool, or way in-game, to access a sound list to see all these unique cries?
Like I've heard Nidoran Male belongs to Cry 0, etc. is there a list of this, and is it possible to hear audio for this?

Thanks :).

Good work!

Someone named ThomasWinwood on the hax.iimarckus forums documented the Red/Blue/Yellow cry data and what Pokémon use which cries, but unfortunately the links are no longer up and I no longer have them saved.

However, the Pokémon Red disassembly has the cry data listed. It is located at 0x39446 in Red and Blue and 0x39462 in Yellow.

This thread on the Pokecommunity forums by Koolboyman also lists one Pokémon for each of the 67 base cries in Gold/Silver/Crystal but no complete cry data, unfortunately.

Also, is there a tool, or way in-game, to access a sound list to see all these unique cries?
Like I've heard Nidoran Male belongs to Cry 0, etc. is there a list of this, and is it possible to hear audio for this?

With the code 01xx1ED1 and 01xx1DD1 you can listen to the cries of any Pokémon, glitch and non-glitch by index number in the Pokédex. (e.g. 01, 01 lets you listen to Rhydon's cry)

Also, certain values for 01xx5BD3 (5AD3 in Yellow) beginning from 14h let you listen to base cries. I don't know their pitch and length but I suspect they're probably 00.

Oh thanks!
Seems like I was right with most of these.
Weedle and Arcanine… makes sense.
At first I had Pikachu with the Bulbasaur group, makes sense too.
Zapdos, Kabuto and Kabutops were the most tricky, but I can hear Zapdos and Kabutops. Kabuto… don't hear it.
Also wow, Seaking and Scyther belong to the Caterpie group.
Rhydon really sounded as if he would belong to Rhyhorn, but there's a slight difference I suppose.

Anyway, I completed the list, didn't include the Missingno's though:

Some of these codes don't work, while I did see them work in your video on the missingno cries…
And the base cry code doesn't work either, nor does the alternative for the pokedex one you provided.

The codes work on my English Blue version, are you typing them in correctly? Or are you possibly using a different language rom? If it's a different language, you'd have to add $500 bytes to the last four bytes of the code to find the right RAM address to modify.

Some work, some only show blank pokedex entries. Yes it's english, pokemon Red.

I forgot to mention that for the base cry code you have to enter a building/cave, exit one, etc. then it will play once without looping. To play another one you have to change the value.

For 01xx1ED1 and 01xx1DD1, did you enter both? I'm not sure if it works properly if both aren't activated. These codes will change any entry's data. Not sure why you're getting blank Pokédex entries. Maybe it will work if you have a full Pokédex?

Oh I thought you meant enter either one, not both. Okay that explains it.
I will try these out later, thanks :).

I just used the first code and it worked fine for me… :V I don't have a complete Pokedex either, but hopefully it works for you later on. :)

Well I used both codes, and some missingno's still don't work.

The base cry code works though, where you have to enter a different map, so thanks :).

Nice thread! The cries in the Pokemon games always interested me. It's cool to see how they work in the earlier games. I'm tempted now to edit the ROM and try some new combinations…I think Koolboyman did that for Brown, actually.

This thread on the Pokecommunity forums by Koolboyman also lists one Pokémon for each of the 67 base cries in Gold/Silver/Crystal but no complete cry data, unfortunately.

The Crystal disassembly has complete cry headers.
