I thought it meant gen as in "generation of consoles" and I was thinking what if the Switch counts as 9th generation of consoles? But definitely not 7th.

I highly doubt it was referring to that if the question was about a Pokémon game, no offense. It's also pretty obvious they're for the Switch.

Why is it that obvious that they're Gen 7? They look more like spin-offs to me.

If we're counting them as a side series, then the same way Stadium was Gen 1, Colosseum and XD were Gen 3, Battle Revolution was Gen 4, and so on. No new Pokémon, no new moves, no changes to battle mechanics, that sort of thing.

Apparently they're officially part of the core series, like FireRed and LeafGreen were. They're just different than what we're used to with "remakes".
