From Generation to Generation (what is your team)

I'm kind of curious, when you play the Pokemon games, what Pokemon do you prefer to be on your team?

(Obviously, you are limited to the Pokemon naturally found in the game and you are limited to the standard 6)

Additionally, do you edit your team to win, or do you stick with those you prefer?

GEN 1
Gengar | Hitmonchan | Alakazam | Lapras | Persian | Pidgeot

GEN 2
Espeon | Miltank | Tyranitar | Scizor | Ampharos | Azumarill

GEN 3
Gardevoir | Blaziken | Sableye | Delcatty | Aggron | Absol

GEN 4
Luxray | Lopunny | Purugly | Lucario | Weavile | Rhyperior

GEN 5
Liepard | Braviary | Lilligant | Zoroark | Haxorus | Bisharp

GEN 6
Pyroar | Gogoat | Pangoro | Meowstic | Noivern | Aurorus

GEN 7
Incineroar | Tsareena | Mimikyu | Dhelmise | Lurantis | Solgaleo

As for Gen 8, I haven't decided yet. But overall, every generation, I avoid using anything from a prior, and I try my best to avoid godly Pokémon.

Personally, I play to have the Pokémon I like, not the team that is the most powerful or broken or overused by everyone else.

Exactly me, except replace bulbasaur with Squirtle

Same here bro! I never go for Charmander, and rarely pick Squirtle.

I deliberately pick different ones every time.

For new generations, I like to pick Pokémon based on their designs. I prefer quirky and cute looking ones. The difficulty scale to me now comes secondary, and with the boost to X items now raising two stages instead of one stage, it now seems a lot easier to do even if still relatively hard compared to say doing a Rayquaza only run. However, it was viable to do this in Generation IV too; just difficult for Pokémon such as Sunkern, Combee and Magikarp.

If I have already trained a Pokémon to at least Level 70, I prefer to not use it anymore, even if it's a design I don't like as much (but would still prefer the design I like the best). (But I use my Level 100s for grinding lower level Pokémon)

I opened my LeafGreen game for the first time in three years to see my original team.

I had an Articuno, Zapdoes, Dewgong, and then a supremely-overleveled Charizard carrying me through the game on my first playthrough when I was like 6. Then I filled out my party with two Seel. It was a different time.

My current VC Crystal team:
Meganium
Quilava
Scyther
Seadra
Crobat
Miltank

My current Yellow version team:
A whole fuckload of glitchmon
Darren the Mega Kicking Gyarados

Emerald doesn't have a "team" per se because I spend most of my time fucking around the Battle Frontier, so my team changes constantly. I don't feel like digging out my copies of Platinum, White, White 2 and Moon to see what my teams are.

When I first played through Ruby, I just used the Blaziken that I had as a starter, but later developed an inexplicable emotional connection to a Flygon and so incorporated that into my "team". Later, when I came across Groudon and Rayquaza, they became part of it because they looked cool and were strong. In 15 years of playing I haven't moved on from this mindset when playing through the main game; I generally just keep my starter and the mascot legendary around.

The eyes and antennae (though I like to just think of it as a dudeish hair style (word dudeish happily stolen from Sherkel)) does it for me, SO CUTE!!

I usually make teams based off of my fave Pokemon and/or Pokemon I think look cool. As long as I get a fluffy Flareon on my team (always my goal, moreso in randomizers!) I am good for the rest of the game and don't really need any other Pokemon since I have my fave on my team.

I've had a lot of teams over the years but there are only two worth talking about here:

Diamond- Infernape,  Staraptor, Luxray, Rampardos,  Bronzong, Quagsire
I never beat gen 4 as a kid despite the fact that it was one of my favorite games because I didn't train any pokemon other than the Turtwig I started with. Before the release of gen 7 I replayed Diamond and wanted to die in parts of it because I realized just how slow it was (this is why I can't wait for a remake). It also didn't help that I have almost no tolerance for grinding, especially if it's more than 3 levels across my team. The primary thing of note was I beat Cynthia while 10 levels lower, with the entire fight planned out, and I have never felt such a feeling of power since.

X- Greninja, Talonflame, Lucario, Venusaur, Aegislash, Goodra
Believe it or not, I designed this Pokemon X team before the game even released. I slightly changed it when I found out that there were gift pokemon early game (Tyrantrum and Heliolisk got bumped out). Obviously this team is hilariously broken, especially for as easy of a game as gen 6. I had zero challenges for the entire game.

Others-
SoulSilver- Typhlosion, Quagsire, Crobat, Heracross, Jolteon, Tauros
Sapphire- Swampert, Swellow, Breloom, Manectric, Skarmory, Absol
White 2- Samurott, Lucario, Azurill, Magnezone, Darmanitan, Sigilyph
Sun- Decidueye, Alolan Raichu, Toucannon, Lycanroc, Mudsdale, Toxapex

So, I haven't even started theorycrafting what my Gen 8 team will look like, but I know I want to use a Drednaw. And a Corviknight. And I'll probably choose Scorbunny as my starter. Wooloo is cute but I'll only use them on my team if their evolutions are strong. I'm not about to run around Galar with the equivalent of a Raticate or Bibarel on my team.
