It's just a petty issue, but seeing new messages is kind of hard. The only indication that I see, is the [1] next to the word messages. Perhaps a box that pops up below the tabs would be more noticeable. Or hell, if you give me the image, I'll put a pokedex icon instead of the talk bubble, and another image that will make the pokedex's screen blink green (or whatever color you prefer, perhaps two different greys to match the theme) if you get a message.
