It seems if you attempt to move or discard various glitch items/pokemon instead of regular items to a particular extent it will change an in-game variable whether being on the game map, the amount of badges you have or your pokedex etc.

On this youtube video someone has resetted their game at a particular point so that they have various glitch items and additional item slots and have switched these in battle so that they arrive in the Hall of Fame room early.

The video is here, it is quite interesting. I used a code to have 10 item slots without any item, and by tossing various of the glitch item 'J i could change the background and crash the game.

Not quite what is happening. They activated the ZZAZZ glitch to overwrite the memory that stores area and coordinates.
Also, the author of that speedrun is, unless they're two different people with similar names, a member of this forum. Perhaps he'll be able to provide a better explanation than I did.

Hi, yes. I posted an explanation with the TAS submission, it's linked on that video, also here: http://tasvideos.org/1958S.html

If it is too long or complicated I use a "glitch" that has the same effect as ZZAZZ but is not. It is a save corruption exploit, it starts by resetting while saving, then switching pokemon to overwrite the item counter.

ZZAZZ also ends overwriting the item counter so they look like they are the same.

There is an unassisted speedrunner using ZZAZZ for a segmented speedrun, I used the save exploit because it is much faster to setup.
