PP Wrap Around Glitch

This is another one I just absolutely cannot get to work. Original post here:

http://glitchcity.info/wiki/index.php/PP_Reset_Glitch

From what I understand, all you have to do is use a move that auto selects, like Wrap for example, when it has only 1 PP left. However, no matter how many times I try, after the move subsides it just has 0/20 PP like any normal move would. Am I missing a step here or something? I've tried this with Mimic and Metronome too, which are two other moves this page says it works with and again they just had 0/10 and 0/20 after subsiding.

It works in Red/Blue (Fire Spin, at least) when the opponent switches in the middle of the binding move. The game will say that you used Fire Spin again instead of the '[PKMN]'s attack continues' message after the opponent switches. You'll end up using two PP instead of one, and then the PP will underflow from 0 to 63. Agatha sometimes does this, but it also works in link battles. I'm not sure if it works in Yellow. AVI

There is a similar bug that works with Hyper Beam. It works when using Hyper Beam with 1 PP and then having a faster opponent's binding move miss on the recharge turn. Youtube video by ThomazSDA

Kamex's Red/Blue/Yellow documentation covers some detailed battling information, and different ways to cause PP underflow glitches.

There is a related glitch that I haven't tested.

If a frozen pokémon gets defrosted by a fire move before its turn in a round ends, it will be
able to attack during that round. It will attack with the last move it selected, or its topmost
move if it had not selected an attack (selecting an attack but switching out will reset the
attack selection). If at this time the move selected has a current PP count of 0, it will still
be used, and afterwards, its current PP will become 63, and full PP ups will be applied to the
move.

I might test it and see if this and other glitches are consistent between versions later.

Ohh, the switching Pokemon thing isn't in the article, so no wonder it wasn't working. Do you know of any trainers that are likely to switch Pokemon?

Oh no it's still not working! I'm battling the Juggler in the Silph building. I got Ponyta's Fire Spin down to 1 PP before the battle started, and then used it as the very first move in battle. After Ponyta attacked, the Juggler immediately switched Pokemon, and all that happened was the move ended, and it wouldn't let me use it again since it says it has 0/15 PP. How frustrating

That's unfortunate.

What version are you trying?

I've heard the behaviour was changed in Stadium.

These are the steps I've done, in Red. I tried them with Agatha and a Link Battle with the same results:

Here are some screenshots of getting it to work in a link battle.

[img]http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj640/Torchickens/FireSpin3.png[/img]

(After screenshot 3 player 2 switches. Then I got that Moltres used Fire Spin instead of "Moltres' attack continues")

[img]http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj640/Torchickens/FireSpin5.png[/img]

N.t I was able to get the PP to 63 when Fire Spin missed after the switch. It doesn't seem to matter whether the move hits after the switch or the number of times the attack continues.

When you were battling the Juggler did Ponyta's Fire Spin hit the Pokémon that the Juggler sent out after the switch? It doesn't work for me if the opponent switches Pokémon straight away before Fire Spin hits the first Pokémon:

Here is a video of me attempting to perform the glitch.

Hopefully this will better explain whats happening.

It seems that it just doesn't work for Jugglers at all. I tried it with a Moltres, Fire Spin and 1 PP and received the same results as you. (Screenshot Album). The same thing happened with CoolTrainer - the move just stopped and Moltres ran out of PP (CoolTrainer can switch Pokémon too).

Maybe this glitch only works with Agatha and link battles. Does it work for you these ways?

If you want to do this often to apply full PP Ups, etc, then I feel the Hyper Beam variant might be easier. You can always do it with wild Tentacools that know Wrap or Constrict. The binding move has to miss after you use Hyper Beam, so its good to use Double Team.

(This link above is actually about a complicated glitch Paco81 found to make Pokémon. Ciel4 wanted a Normal/Ghost Dragonite with perfect IVs, and one of the requirements was abnormal PP)

Ohh, the switching Pokemon thing isn't in the article, so no wonder it wasn't working. Do you know of any trainers that are likely to switch Pokemon?

Here's a list of Trainer classes in Pokémon Red that tend to switch Pokémon.

13: Juggler [see note] (0xD5)
21: Juggler (0xDD)
31: CoolTrainer (0xE8)
46: Agatha (0xF6)

Might be incomplete.

Use the codes 01xx59D0 (instant battle), 01xx5DD0 (roster number) and the game will initiate a battle with the first roster of that trainer. If 01xx5DD0 is too high, the game tends to load the roster of the next Trainer class. You can get the same effect with the Ditto glitch if you lower the attack stage of the opponent Pokémon from 7 (neutral) down to 1.

[note]: For some reason I don't know, 0xD5 isn't a 'normal' Juggler. This Juggler has no rosters, therefore 01015DD0 has you battle the first party for the Fisherman class that follows.

According to IIMarckus and others' disassembly of the game, the following Trainers use generic Trainer AI and can't use items or switch Pokémon.

01: Youngster (0xC9)
02: Bug Catcher (0xCA)
03: Lass (0xCB)
04: Sailor (0xCC)
05: Jr. Trainer M (0xCD)
06: Jr. Trainer F (0xCE)
07: Pokémaniac (0xCF)
08: Super Nerd (0xD0)
09: Hiker (0xD1)
10: Biker (0xD2)
11: Burglar (0xD3)
12: Engineer (0xD4)
13: Fisherman (0xD6)
14: Swimmer (0xD7)
15: Cue Ball (0xD8)
16: Gambler (0xD9)
17: Beauty (0xDA)
18: Psychic (0xDB)
19: Rocker (0xDC)
1B: Tamer (0xDE)
1C: Bird Keeper (0xDF)
1E: Rival (picture 1) (0xE1)
1F: Unused - Professor Oak (0xE2)
20: Unused - Chief (0xE3)
21: Scientist (0xE4)
22: Rocket (0xE5)
41: Gentleman (0xF1)
45: Channeller (0xF5)

These Trainers may use items:

Blackbelt (X Attack)
Giovanni (Guard Spec)
CoolTrainerM (X Attack)
CoolTrainerF (Hyper Potion)
Brock (Full Heal)
Misty (X Defend)
Lt. Surge (X Speed)
Erika (Super Potion)
Koga (X Attack)
Blaine (Super Potion) - There's a bug where he can use it on Pokémon with full HP
Sabrina (Hyper Potion)
Rival [picture 2] (Potion)
Rival [picture 3] (Full Restore)
Lorelei (Super Potion)
Bruno (X Defend)
Agatha (Super Potion)
Lance (Hyper Potion)

Same thing happens when I try it on Agatha.

I will try both the wild Tentacool/Hyper Beam and the Link Cable Battle versions though.

Hope that works for you.

I had a look at the switching glitch again. I was wrong. It seems like you can get it to work provided that the opponent attacks first, like what ThomazSDA suggests about the Hyper Beam glitch.

My Moltres was faster than the Juggler's Kadabra (level 29), but slower than Agatha's Gengar (level 56). I tried it again with a slower Pokémon than Kadabra and got the glitch to work.

Ohh I see, that explains a lot. I may just need to use a different Pokemon then
