Trainer-Fly glitch and talking to trade NPCs

Paco81 found that you can encounter a Level 152 Kingler in Pokémon Yellow if you talk to the scientist who asks whether you want to trade a Kangaskhan for a Muk after you escape from a long-range Trainer and get the ability to talk/get the Start button back.

I tested it with other trade NPCs and it turns out that each one gives a different Pokémon. They are as follows:

1) Route 2 - Clefairy for Mr. Mime: Level 80 Missingno. (92h, Dec: 146)
2) Route 5 - Cubone for Machoke: Level 80 Starmie
3) Route 11 - Lickitung for Dugtrio: Level 80 Clefable
4) Route 18 - Tangela for Parasect: Level 80 Snorlax
5) Cinnabar Lab - Golduck for Rhydon: Level 80 Starmie
6) Cinnabar Lab - Growlithe for Dewdong: Level 141 Electrode
7) Cinnabar Lab - Kangaskhan for Muk: Level 152 Kingler

I haven't tested Red/Blue, or if it even works on those games yet.

OK, here are the Pokémon you get on Red (haven't tested Blue):

1) Route 2 - Abra for Mr. Mime: Level 139 Snorlax
2) Route 5 - Nidoran for Nidoran: Level 80 Missingno. (50h, Dec: 80)
3) Route 11 - Nidorino for Nidorina: Level 80 Starmie
4) Route 18 - Slowbro for Lickitung: Level 80 Missingno. (50h, Dec: 80)
5) Cerulean City - Poliwhirl for Jynx: Level 80 Missingno. (50h, Dec: 80)
6) Vermilion City - Spearow for Farfetch'd: Level 80 Missingno. (50h, Dec: 80)
7) Cinnabar Island - Raichu for Electrode: Level 80 Missingno. (92h, Dec: 146)
8) Cinnabar Island - Venonat for Tangela: Level 139 Kingler
9) Cinnabar Island - Ponyta for Seel: Level 145 Clefable

I tried the cartridge Blue version and it looks like it's the same as the Red version.

The Cinnabar Island ones give out the same results as said on the previous post.

Just tried in Japanese Green and it doesn't work. The lv. 7 Pokémon related to the last battled trainer (ie. Mew) appears instead. Just to make sure I was doing it right I tried in the english Red version and it worked.

Any chance the levels and species of the Pokemon are determined by the speech / text box of the NPCs? I see many 50h here.

Thanks for testing this out on other versions, SloshedMail and Pawny!

Not sure. I'd imagine it would work with other non-trade NPCs otherwise (though it, at least mainly doesn't)

I just tried Japanese Blue and it doesn't seem to work on that version, either.

As an addendum, Werster states in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47dksDoavWw (From 28:38), that the Trainer-Fly Pokemon given after talking to the trade NPC is determined by the 5th character of the trade Pokemon's nickname, along the same lines as the Old Man Glitch. He uses LOLA the Jynx to obtain a Missingno.

Of course you can lose to Misty's Starmie to get a Missingno in Cerulean anyway, but for speedruns the above way seems to be faster.

(Yay for a year old necropost!)

Ah, right. That's interesting. Thanks Vuroja5 for letting me know! I wasn't sure whether to watch werster's video as I thought it might have the same previously used tricks.

It looks like the level is derived from the sixth character, then. In cases where the Pokémon/level is derived past the end of the name, all relevant values are $50. It doesn't seem like the nicknames follow on, unlike the pre-set names, because take "DUX"; his apparent fifth and sixth characters are $50. I haven't confirmed this by looking in the game, though.

Also, as a side note, I haven't tested whether this trick works in Pocket Monsters Pikachu.

Pokémon Yellow:

MILES: (Mr. Mime)

S, $92 == Missingno. ($92)
[$50] == 80

RICKY: (Machoke)

Y, $98 == Starmie
[$50] == 80

GURIO: (Dugtrio)

O, $8E == Clefable
[$50] == 80

SPIKE: (Parasect)

E, $84 == Snorlax
[$50] == 80

BUFFY: (Rhydon)

Y, $98 == Starmie
[$50] == 80

CEZANNE: (Dewgong)

N, $8D == Electrode
N, $8D == 141

STICKY: (Muk)

K, $8A == Kingler
Y, $98 == 152

Pokémon Red/Blue:

MARCEL: (Mr. Mime)

E, $84 == Snorlax
L, $8B == 139

SPOT: (Nidoran)

[$50] == Missingno. ($50)
[$50] == 80

TERRY: (Nidorina)

Y, $98 == Starmie
[$50] == 80

MARC: (Lickitung)

[$50] == Missingno. ($50)
$50 == 80

LOLA: (Jynx)

[$50] == Missingno. ($50)
$50 == 80

DUX: (Farfetch'd)

[$50] == Missingno. ($50)
$50 == 80

DORIS: (Electrode)

S, $92 == Missingno. ($92)
$50 == 80

CRINKLES: (Tangela)

K, $8A == Kingler (ha ha, how fitting)
L, $8B == 139

SAILOR: (Seel)

O, $8E == Clefable
R, $91 == 145

Theoretical outcomes for unused trades.

This assumes that $50 characters follow the names.

Pokémon Red:

CHIKUCHIKU: (Beedrill)

U, $94 == Abra
C, $82 == 130

Pokémon Yellow:

STINGER: (Beedrill)

G, $86 == Missingno. ($86)
E, $84 == 132

MARTY: (Pidgeot)

Y, $98 == Starmie
[$50] == 80

BART: (Mew)

[$50] == Missingno. ($50)
[$50] == 80
