Mew trick using strength

Hi, I was unable to find this method of using the mew glitch, so I thought I should share it.

You probably already know of the method where you can fly from the trainer,
save with a computer and beat the elite four to trigger the wild pokémon encounter.

This method is nearly identical, however instead of defeating the elite four, you only have
to move a rock using strength.
After you have moved the rock, the start menu will trigger as it does when you have defeated a trainer,
when you move back into the route with the trainer you flew from.

I did not know about this and I will test it, thanks!

Does it work with other HMs, like Cut or Surf?

Yep, it does work with Strength (not any other HM). I can't understand why, that's ridiculous. Thanks a lot for sharing this method that greatly simplifies the glitch!

I haven't found it to work with other HM's, however it is when you move the rock,
and not when you use the strength move, that it works.
So I would think that it somehow affects the same ram location as when battling a trainer.
But I don't know why it works :P

When you fly away from a long-range trainer, the game is waiting for the NPC to finish their walking animation before it shows the encounter text and starts the battle. A Strength boulders animation must work the same way as an NPCs, so it clears the flag that allows the battle to start.

By that logic, the reason that the entirety of the elite four must be beaten is because… professor oak walks at the end.  Are there any other locations where this might be doable?  (EG… a trainer that walks?)

You can also use the guy who stops you from leaving Pewter City if you havent beaten Brock yet, or the guy who escorts you to Pewter Museum (using the box save trick to be able to talk to him). The only other walking NPCs in the game that I know of are one-time story events.

(I was thinking for a moment that the guard blocking off the S.S. Anne might be usable, but hes not, because he only makes you move, without moving himself.)

Aren't there a few walking trainers in cinnabar mansion?  (Though they stop walking after you've beaten them – that's how Twitch Plays Pokémon got trapped).  Would those work?

NPCs that wander around on their own dont lock the game as theyre moving like trainer encounters and Strength boulders do.

The Museum guy disappeared after I used him once, so you might need to fly to another map with a disappearable object to prevent that.

Since it's related to the ongoing discussion, Crystal_ recently made a video about how NPC movements are set up in the Generation I games.
