From what I've seen, ??? Arceus is probably a placeholder (or just something meant to be unobtainable).  But if we could find a way to hack the plates (the things that make it change type) to type ??? then we could unlock it, right?

it's been done by the pokesav forum.
All pokemon's normal form's hex is 40
The ???'s arceus'es hex is 43
Using pokesa and a he editor you can hack one

Diamond/Pearl - Appears as ???-Type, but says it is Normal. Starts as ??? when entering battle, but transforms (yes, transforms) into the Normal Type.

Battle Revolution - Appears as Normal Type (Perhaps because the ??? appearance is a beta leftover?), but the transformation still occurs when entering battle.

So you can only gain the ??? type permanently when you don't choose it in battle? What a shame…But oh well…

It transforms obviously to the lack of plate, am I right? It would also happen, for example, to a *insert type here* Arceus who lost its plate through an item-loss attack like Thief or Knock Off.

Actually, for both arceus and origin form giratina, if you try to do anything to it's item, the game says it has the sticky hold ability O_o

That's just weird. But then again, the ??? type Arceus that could've been made wasn't even holding an item, thus there's no reason for it to stay in its ??? form, so it transformed back to its Normal type.
