So I decided to look for MKW custom tracks again.. (cause I only have an old version of the custom track pack), and decided to look at the author's YouTube account.

And he's made videos of some interesting glitches he found in MKW.. (and he made videos of glitches he found in other games too, might have to make a seperate topic about those)
I'll just post a link and a short summary, a longer more concise documentation is in the video descriptions..

MKW - Gliding/Flying Glitch
This happens when a respawn point is on the same place as a mushroom, which does not happen under normal conditions; it can therefore can ONLY be done on a custom track specifically made or modified to take advantage of this glitch.

Rainbow Road "Ultra Shortcut" Respawn Glitch
This was found by utter coincidence. If you're Player 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12, you respawn slightly further back from the respawn point and this messes up the checkpoint if you fall off the track in the right place. Of course, because you have to be Player 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12, you can only do this online, and the only sure way to know that you're one of these players is to be playing in a room online with friends on your list. Therefore this glitch only has a use in tool-assisted speedruns of the track.

Phantom Racer Glitch
This only happened once, and MrBean35000vr happened to be recording it at the time. He theorised it could be something to do with ghost connections, that is, someone's connection gets lost but the server thinks they are still connected (it happens sometimes, generally if you unplug your router it always happens)

Mr Bean has done some great stuff in Mario Kart Wii, he also found the Wario's Gold Mine glitch. It's 2am at the moment, but tomorrow I can write you up how the checkpoint system works and a list of the currently known glitches, if you'd like.

Btw, I TAS Mario Kart Wii.  (might play more Time Trials again a little over the summer but I'll probably have lost a lot of skill)

Would be nice :)

Okay, so on a given course there are three types of checkpoints, which are the start/finish line, "major" checkpoints and "minor" checkpoints.  Here is an example map, with the start/finish line in red, miajor checkpoints in green and minor checkpoints in blue.

These checkpoints sort of make "areas" for the game to determine where the player is.  If the player passes the green checkpoint immediately after the finish line, for example, the game will determine that they are somewhere between that checkpoint and the next minor checkpoint.  Similarly, if the player goes backwards through the second checkpoint (which is a minor checkpoint), the game will assume the same (this also actually counts as passing the first major checkpoint since the player entered the area immediately after it).

In order to complete a lap, the player will need to pass at least the last major checkpoint and cross the finish line.  The catch is, if any other major checkpoint is passed, all other major checkpoints after it must also be passed in order for the lap count to register at the end of the lap.

Using this information we can essentially categorise the glitches into two types: ones that skip major checkpoints, and ones that don't.

Mushroom Gorge (checkpoint map)

Glitch type: Skips major checkpoints

Execution: Use a mushroom (item) and jump onto the mushroom (game item) at the start of the lap.  The most common variation is to ride over the mountain and land on the other side, and drive around the last turn to complete the lap.  There are many variations of this glitch which are faster than the former which involve completing the lap while on the mountain by turning around on the mountain itself.

Videos:

Common variation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wi3J0p5tWo
"Cookie" variation (named after discoverer of a similar variation that used a different bike): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PY7RiVwILc
"Sam" variation (again, named after discoverer, lap 2 variation): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ggo4Ob4qxcA
Another really weird variation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS2XU5t1Dkk

There is also a minor bug at the last corner of Mushroom Gorge, where after playing the lap normally the player can do a similar trick, using a mushroom bounce to ride the mountain over the canyon on the last corner.  This is considered a glitch because it involves riding the mountain, whereas jumping over the canyon does not.

Mario Circuit (checkpoint map)

Glitch type: Skips major checkpoint

Execution: Use a mushroom and wheelie to get air off the curb.  Clip a tree to get huge airtime.  Fly over the mountain.  Backtrack under the bridge to hit the finish line (because the line goes over the bridge, and apparently under it too).  Complete the rest of the lap normally (until the point with the tree).  Any tree will do as long as you can get over the mountain.

Coconut Mall (checkpoint map)

Glitch type: Skips major checkpoints

Execution: Use one of many methods to get into the parking lot to the right of the finish line.  Drive around the parking lot three times in such a way as to hit the last checkpoint and the finish line.

Wario's Gold Mine (checkpoint map)

Glitch type: Skips major checkpoints

Execution: After the start line, immediately use a mushroom, wheelie, and jump towards the green pipe.  You can bounce off the pipe and go up through the track.  Backtrack into the cave to trigger the last major checkpoint backwards.  Turn around and complete the lap.

The glitch can also be completed by not bouncing off the pipe but respawning on the track after the fall, and proceeding the same.  Instead of a mushroom, a boost from the halfpipe next to the finish line can also be used.  A very uncommon method that also works is to clip from the start line post and fly over to the track rather than bouncing off the pipe.

There is also a minor glitch in the cave which involves jumping off the track and bouncing off a beam to skip a corner.  This is considered a glitch because touching the beam normally causes the player to be picked up by Lakitu.

Maple Treeway (confusing as hell checkpoint map)

Glitch type:  Skips major checkpoints

Execution:  This glitch comes in three sections which must all be done in order for the glitch to work.  The first section is to jump into a solid out of bounds area to the left of the finish line.  The second section involves using two mushrooms (or one in a Tool-Assisted Speedrun, allowing the glitch to be done on multiple laps) to jump over a gap, bypassing the first major checkpoint.  The third section is a jump after the cannon over to the track to the left.  Since the first checkpoint was skipped, the lap is able to count.

Grumble Volcano (checkpoint map)

Glitch type: Skips major checkpoints

Execution: At the start, jump onto the large rock to the left.  Drive around the rock, making sure to hit the start line and the minor checkpoint after the last major checkpoint backwards in each time around.

There is another more minor glitch that involves jumping either over a rock or into the lava (picked up by Lakitu and placed on the other side) to cut a large part of the course.

Bowser's Castle (checkpoint map)

Glitch type: Does not skip major checkpoints

Execution:  After the long room with the giant Bowser shooting exploding fireballs, take the right path (can also be done on left but requires mushrooms and is much harder).  Jump off the halfpipe and up and through the wall.

I'll make a seperate post for the Retro track glitches soon since this one is getting rather long and my laptop battery is about to die.
