The debate isn't "is distributing copyrighted material legal", it's "is Limewire legal"?

Yes it is. Distributing copyrighted stuff, however, is illegal whether it's through Limewire, BitTorrent, HTTP, or handing it out on floppy disks to your friends at lunch.

Limewire, BitTorrent, etc. are legal, but downloading copyrighted stuff isn't. =P

And, seeing as copyright laws will likely not be changed within the next decade or so… =/

And when they do you can bet they'll be extended. Stupid lobbyists.

So why hasn't anyone tracked down people who've illegally downloaded material from Limewire, BitTorrent, etc.?

They do, it's just not a very common occurrence when compared to the sheer number of downloads. Some ISPs track torrent downloads, and the RIAA likes to threaten colleges when someone's illegally downloaded using their network.

America is crap anyway, tbh…

The MPAA/RIAA/etc. know what you download, and our money is practically worthless compared to € or ? =/

And don't get me started on the Patriot Act. I sincerely hate it, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act…

I just hope 20.1.2009 comes faster, so we can get rid of Bush forever =P

The sheer question over whether LimeWire is illegal is kind of rhetorical if you ask me. For instance, the program in open-source, and you do not have to pay a subscription fee, as well, it does not cost money or require any contribution to their program in order to utilize it. On a more broader range, there are a lot of different programs besides just LimeWire for music piracy. The same thing goes for playing commercialised ROMS. A lot of people do it, I do, and yet it is illegal. The problem with officials not being able to crack down on people who pirate music is the vast number of people who do download music.

More simply speaking, and concluding this post, if it's free, and you know it's not supposed to be free, it's illegal.

There is no debate to be had
Limewire technically isnt illegal
the program itself is perfectly legal
just like torrent clients
the creator of the program has no control over what its users do once they download it

However the common use of limewire is peer to peer downloading of copyrighted materials. This does violate intellectual property laws and such

Not fully true. People have bean busted for Limewire/ Bittorrent stuff, but its mostly for Uploading then downloading. Course, if you upload a load of stuff, chances are you've download a load of stuff already. But, you can get caught, but thats only if you Upload/Download a shit load of files. An album here and there will go unseen.

I use LimeWire, and I've been fine. I've used it for about 5-6 years, so I've downloaded songs, and films that I don't think I can find anymore here in the UK. iMesh was a good downloaded source, it was the best. Shame it got the axe though.

The program? No.

What it can give you? Yes, but only if you get caught :)
