Apple's stupidity (and me calling it early)

I predicted this would happen when I saw checkra1n in the works on Twitter.

https://mobilesyrup.com/2019/12/07/ready-wireless-iphone/

That's right, no ports. Wireless charging only, no iTunes support, permanent bricks ("just buy a new one lol" style, most likely)

i saw this coming from so far away

Why am I not surprised? Apple is just a meme nowadays, they're trying to outplay themselves.

Or, they're possibly scared of checkm8-like exploits and blocking every possible chance to abuse them.

I mean… no ports, no exploits, right?

...right?

I just have to ask…why? Maybe if it's the only electronic  device someone owns,  they could get a wireless charger and headphones, but that will never be the case for anybody. How is someone meant to know what's connected to what without wires? How will one know for certain they're even connected (beyond a tiny charging icon) or be able to trust they'll stay connected?

I can think of some ways, but nothing that doesn't make operation unnecessarily complicated, especially with more than one wireless device in a room.

As for why they're doing all this, well, it's probably because of this, and them only having 12% market share this quarter. They're panicking and trying to throw ideas out there without the comfort of making sure they make sense first. Normal people like us might think they're doing fine, but I suspect it's what the shareholders are yelling right now. Probably shouting "do something! Whatever you're doing isn't working! Make something different!" and this is what they came up with on the spot.

Maybe. I'm not that much of a speculator.

Will it work? Maybe. No matter what happens, the media and some YouTube channels will slurp it all up and go "yes no holes this is so exciting" and do Apple's marketing department's job for them, repeating the same bullshit. But there's only so much bullshit Apple can do before it starts alienating everyday consumers who actually buy things. Sure, a lot of people are clueless and don't know what's best for them, but like fucking with charging, though?

Casual phone users seem to care a lot about charging their phones. I can kinda see someone at an event just running out of battery and being like "whoops! I can't even ask if anyone has a charger because it requires a weird wireless thing!", this basically screws with the whole idea of portable chargers and charging ports on other devices that people are already used to.

And more importantly, that Android (unless Samsung is also trying to pull some bullshit) allows users to do just fine. Locking users down like this and trying to force them into proprietary solutions and telling them how and when they can use their device only really works if you're the market leader, or otherwise have an effective monopoly. I feel like it's not gonna work if people can just buy an Android phone instead and save themselves the trouble but then, I don't really have faith in the general public's ability to make informed decisions anymore.

"who the fuck makes informed decisions anymore, it's all about clout lol" seems to be the driving force of my generation (yes, both of them, as I fall in Millenial or Gen Z depending on the source) which is seen not only in the fact that Apple isn't dead as fuck outside specialist roles but also with all these life-threatening "challlenges" that clout-chasers die doing for fame.

humanity is the worst species to ever come to be, some of us don't even want to be the same species as our peers.

Off topic but ok.

I really like my iPhone X. I plan on getting an Apple Watch soon an a MacBook eventually. With that said Im not an Apple fanboy or anything but I do enjoy their services. I cant even fathom why they would remove the charging port, that is just stupid in my opinion. With the removal of the headphone jack it kind of made sense, but not really. I use AirPods myself and I prefer a wireless option, but theres no reason to deny people the choice. Im curious to see what their reasoning for removing the charging port is but whatever it ends up being I think it will be  BS and cause a lot of backlash.

Yeah, that's a really weird decision to remove the Lightning connector, especially with how it's a proprietary connector. I can't see why they'd remove it altogether, regardless of whether or not it's slated for a 2021 release.

But at the same time, I've got a Galaxy S9+ atm, and I'm looking to move over to the iPhone 11/12 as soon as I can, especially before 2021 now. :P

Not caring much about phones, I only really stopped using apple because they did the whole 'we're removing the ability to charge your phone and use headphones at the same time unless you buy our special ones' garbage a few years back.

No offense, but earbuds are horrid and you would actually be more likely to see me wearing them if you paid ME $150, not the other way around. Headphones >>>

I can string earbuds under my shirt and put them right in with just a tiny motion and look cooler in my own eyes at the same time! Can't do that with over-ear headphones. ;) Though I'll only ever go for the kinds with the attachable rubber tips.

Zoway's post said everything else I would have ever thought of on this, anyway.

For the record, I actually like most of Apple's products. I find most of them to be pretty intuitive, sleek, and easy to use for the average user. I tend to figure that I know more about how to use a phone/feel more comfortable than technology than the average user, but I feel as if, even if I had less technical knowledge than I do, I'd still feel very comfortable using an iPhone or an Apple product to do anything.

However, there are things that Apple shouldn't mess with. I can understand wanting to innovate, but innovation shouldn't come at the sacrifice of compatibility. I was already frustrated with Apple when they made the switch from their 40-prong cable to the lightning cable, but over time I came to like the change. Apple had a universal cable that worked with the majority of their mobile products, and, since the lightning cable was USB-based, I could essentially plug it in to any USB port and use that device to charge my phone. The good thing about the lightning cable, too, is that, well, it's a cable–if I want to use my phone while charging it, I can do so with no problem. Wireless charging eliminates these two conveniences.

I miss the days of old Apple, frankly. When I was growing up, Apple was a leader in innovation, and I know that's true for most everyone here. They re-invented how the computer was made, made a superior smartphone that pioneered the industry today, and iPods were essentially perfected versions of MP3 players before they merged with iPhones. That innovation, though, all happened more than a decade ago. I haven't done a ton of research recently, but it seems like Apple's new products for the past decade have all been new versions of the iPhone, or knockoffs of the iPhone. And sure, the iPhone is great, and it has a lot of neat features (Face ID is nice, the camera is really quality, the screen is quality and I love the full-screen display)… but none of those features seem really, truly "innovative" like mid-2000s Apple seemed.

It's a disappointing trend to say the least. I did read somewhere that countries may start forcing Apple to make their phones and devices compatible with regular USB-C cords, though, so hopefully that goes through and nips this "excluvisity-innovation" in the bud.
