What you need for ROM hacking:
- A ROM. For a beginning hacker I would recommend Pokemon Gold or Silver, because they are only two megabytes in size; although RBY are about half that, their coding is nigh-impossible for a beginner to understand.
- An emulator with RAM, palette, sprite, etc functions. VisualBoyAdvance should work fine for now, but having some others (such as no$gmb or BGB) would be good as a backup.
- A tile editor. I use Tile Layer Pro. The tile format in G/S/C is Game Boy 2BPP, or occasionally 1BPP.
- A hex editor. I use WindHex32.
- Windows Calculator, if you use Windows. Make sure it's set to Scientific.
- A plain text editor, preferably Programmer's Notepad or Notepad++. (This is for taking notes of what you've done.)

A good understanding of hexadecimal (base 16), decimal (base 10), and binary (base 2) is strongly recommended.

If I were you, I would start with hacking text.

If you plan on hacking Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, the Pandocs are a valuable resource. Even if it's beyond your ability to understand right now (it took me several months to get what it was saying), reading it through several times will definitely increase what you know later.

Binary is base 2, and has two digits: 0 and 1. Hence, base 2.
Decimal is base 10, and has ten digits: 0 through 9. Hence, base 10.
Hexadecimal is base 16, and has sixteen digits: 0 through F. Hence, base 16.

Theoretically, anything. Try downloading the Pokemon Prism beta to see an example. (When you download the patch, put it in the same folder as a Gold ROM and rename the ROM to "PokemonPrismBeta.gbc", without quotes.)

Nah, it's too big. To fit as a normal PkMn sprite.
