I gotta say, Water-type Pokemon. Like Vaporeon, I had one on my XD, and he was quite strong, after evolving at lvl 50. so, I'd say go Water-types.

I may have voted Dragon if Gyarados was Water/Dragon.

But unfortunately, Game Freak chose the type that makes no sense for Gyarados, Flying.

I'd have to go along with Fire Type.  Fire has always been my favorite since I chose a Cyndaquil on my first game, Crystal. Plus it helps me win against my friend's Grass Type team.
