Why hello there everybody. Thought I'd join this site since it looks promising and I love messing with Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon games. But anyways, hi! My name's Jeffrey. But you can call me Jeff! owo I'm 15 years old, and I'm currently a freshman in high school. I like to use the computer, play countless video games, including Mega Man and of course Pokemon. I also specialize in gameshark/game genie codes for the first two generations.

lol scf3. lD anyways, I've got new info on the pokemon red/blue/yellow party pokemon type codes. Recently I found the digits out just by trial and error. Should I add them to the gameshark page or just post them here to be added by someone else?

That isn't listed yet? Sure I guess. I did that long ago to japanese Red/Green. But instead of trial and error, I just edited the pokémon into someone with the type I was looking for.

Alright, Here they are, all the sets of them. Keep in mind that the Pokemon digits are different than the type digits, the type different than the move digits, and so forth. If you want to put them on the wiki page, that's fine.

I hate to rain on your parade, but:
http://glitchcity.info/biglist.htm
Also, I'm pretty sure they were in the order that the Pokémon were created. There were originally 190 planned, as discovered by a Smogon user when he interviewed a developer (sorry for ambiguity but I don't have time to go searching at the moment), but some were removed which are where the Missingno. variants are stored.

First response: It's alright. lD
Second: I don't get it, I thought the Missingno. variants were error handlers. Except for the three fossil variants and the ghost form, which all four of those actually are used. Well, the ghost anyways. It shows that sprite when you're in the Lavender Tower without the Silph Scope. Any ghost you run into will have that pic. As for the three fossil pokemon, I'd say that they planned on making some sort of sprite cutscene for the revival of the fossil pokemon, but then they just used the overworld sprites. But that's my reasoning,

The wiki has an incomplete port of these:

http://glitchcity.info/pokemonrbycodes.txt
http://glitchcity.info/pokemongscodes.txt
http://glitchcity.info/pokemonccodes.txt

Idk why these aren't linked to in the articles, I would edit it but I can't approve any edits I make because of wiki bugs.

The 190 pokés thing does make sense since there are 39 Missingnos. As for why there's the fossil/ghost variations, I have no idea.

(Sorta offtopic, but wow, I didn't know the Bird-type exists in Gen 2 as well. That removes the possibility of it having been related to the "Bird Keeper" trainer class since there's the Cooltrainer and Pokémaniac-types)

Hi Jeff. Welcome to the forums.

The fossil sprites are used in Pewter Museum. You need to press the 'A' button on an exhibit to see their sprite and some text. I suspect that the game probably loads Pokémon 182 (B6h) and 183 (B7h); the Kabutops and Aerodactyl fossil Missingno. in order for them to appear.

'Missingno.' is only an error handler in a few ways.

1) It's name was programmed into the game and is used whenever those 39 invalid Pokémon appear.
2) It has special data telling it not to evolve or learn any level up moves.
3) In Red/Green/Blue/Pikachu, it has placeholder Pokédex data; 1m and 10kg. In Japanese Blue and Pocket Monsters Pikachu, it is the '???' species and has the Pokédex entry " くち" (Comment to be written).

So in other words, it isn't an error handler for invalid Pokémon in general. Most invalid Pokémon have invalid names derived from unrelated data in the ROM.

Whether the Missingno. actually were unused Pokémon is not known, but since Shigeki Morimoto confirmed there were 190 Pokémon and there are 39 Missingno., it seems much more likely. Here are a few points suggesting they were invalid Pokémon that were deleted/not defined yet.

1) The Missingno. are permeated between the index numbers of real Pokémon.
2) Though most of the Missingno. have base 0 (Nidoran), pitch 0 and length 256 cries, there are nine that have unique cries. (More information here). Coincidentally or not, one of these Missingno. has Dragonair's base cry (5Eh), and another Missingno. has a slowed down version of Poliwag's cry (51h). These correspond with some pre-release 'Nyosuka' and Dragonair designs.
3) Zog from Smogon interviewed Shigeki Morimoto; one of the people responsible for designing the Pokémon, and he said "Yes; we decided to save the rest of the designs for later". Also, according to an interview taken from the Game Staff List Assocation Japan (translation by GlitterBerri here). The staff designed more than 200 Pokémon for the first games, then 'whittled them down to 150'.
