Substitute has no assigned hex in the GB games.

That is something interesting to make note of.

Substitute doesn't have a hex, huh?

What would happen if you somehow got a substitute sprite by itself (like just the substitute and no other Pokemon behind it)? Would it be possibly to hack it like that? Would it copy stats like the fossil and ghost MissingNo's do?

As a side note, what causes the sprites to flip around in battle when you look at MissingNo/M's stats?

If the species byte is 0 (substitute is not a species), the Pokemon is [name=RB:000].

Ah, I was suspecting that, actually.

So, assunming the first M is a Substitute, catching it automatically makes it an M b/c Substitute has no hex, therefore setting it a 000 hex. When the real M is caught, the game scrolls back to the last legit Pokemon, which is Ditto, so it becomes a Ditto. Either that, or the theoru that I game thinks it's transformed, so it must be a Ditto.

Does that sound right?

Wait, but IS Ditto the last legit PkMn?

Oh. Well then, I guess it's the "everything Transformed is Ditto" theory then.

Why do the graphics mess up when you look at MissingNo/M/whateverglitch stats?

But again, WHY?
