yeah, but I heard decompilation is experimental and fails in most cases

In fact I was looking for a program to decompile NetBattle, but it seems to be tough to find a decent Visual Basic decompiler

Yeah, the higher-level you get, the less accurate decompilers are… I can only imagine the horrors of decompiling VB. Disassembling GBC games isn't that hard (just time consuming), mostly I find a ret and search for pointers to the following instruction. If the pointer's preceded by a call, then that's definitely ASM as opposed to some form of data. A debugger is also very nice.

Maybe you could go on Smogon and ask for info on how Competitor is being programmed?
